Covid-19 has had a huge effect on many people, especially students. A lot of students are struggling with what to do at home because they feel as if there is nothing to do. However, there are definitely things to do, like read! Books can make people feel and think so many things. Books are also very educational and a good way to stay occupied.
Out of all the genres, teenagers are typically interested in young adult fiction. A series of books that is enjoyed by a lot of high schoolers is Harry Potter written by JK Rowling. The Harry Potter series is about a young boy who enters a world of witchcraft where he learns to perform magic and his conflicts between Voldemort. Another book that teenagers may want to read is The Stranger by Albert Camus. This book is about a man who lives a meaningless life. He believes that there is no meaning to life. He lives a pretty simple life where life and death don’t matter.
Tweens interests are usually all over the place because they are still figuring out what exactly they are ito. Two good recommendations of tweens are Heart Of A Samurai by Margi Preus and The Crossover by Kwame Alexander. Heart Of A Samurai is based on a true story about a teenage boy who was lost in a shipwreck, rescued and brought to America. The Crossover is about the experiences of a 12-year old boy. These two books would interest young kids who are interested in extraordinary experiences of young kids.
Two nonfiction books that would be good reads for tweens would be Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly and Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson. Hidden Figures is about three African American women and their contributions to aeronautics working at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. They worked during a time when racism was common and they experienced a great deal of it as well. Brown Girl Dreaming is about the childhood of a young girl who was born to the descendants of former slaves. These books are great for kids who are into non-fiction because they are informative and discuss the struggles people of color had to experience to be successful.
While reading a book is a great activity that one can do to pass the time during quarantine, it also expands ones knowledge and nothing can beat knowledge!
