The current season for the boy’s varsity soccer team has been one of the most successful in years. South Brunswick, East Brunswick, and even New Brunswick, which have been formidable adversaries in the past, have lost to the team this season.

One of the reasons for the team’s very accomplished record thus far, is the presence of certain players. John “Chachi” Torres has proven his worth this year. The eleventh grader starts for the varsity team as a center back, alongside his teammate Hunter Merring, another center back. Even though John plays as a defender, he has scored two goals this season. In terms of scoring, there are many other players who have gone above and beyond the confines of playing forward or midfielder. However, John plays in back, and has still managed to score two goals.

“The first one was on Monroe off of a corner, and the second was against South Brunswick, also off a corner,” he explains. Both of these teams were ones that varsity has lost to in the past, yet this time around they managed to score more than them — and much of the credit goes to John.

“As for the team this year, we have definitely proven to other townships that we are a force to be reckoned with. We have beaten teams we usually don’t, and it’s safe to say the current varsity team is the best one that has attended Piscataway in years.
