On Thursday, April 18th, 2024, the Piscataway Varsity Boys Baseball team led by a standout performance by senior Bobby Bressler beat South River High School 9-6.
Bobby Bressler’s “no hitter” is the first of his career and first by a Piscataway Player since April 16th, 1992!
When asked whether or not he knew about how well he was pitching during the game, Bobby described how he didn’t even know he was pitching a “no hitter” until he finished his 6th inning.
“I didn’t know until I finished the 6th inning and my coach comes up to me and says ‘this is your game, you’re finishing the game no matter what, you have a no hitter’”
Bressler also explained how a lot was going through his mind during his last pitches but he was motivated by his coach’s words and his drive to be the best. Bressler knew he could do it as he walked up to the mound for his final pitches.
“A lot was going through my head the last couple pitches for sure. I just walked 2 batters in this inning already so I had runners on 1st and 2nd. I knew the bottom of the order was up, so fastballs were key here. Though once I had [the hitter at] 1-2, nothing was stopping me from there and getting that no hitter and striking him out for the last out”
This historical moment is even more impressive as Bressler recently came back from a UCL elbow injury that kept him sidelined all of last year.
“The injury truly wasn’t easy…not being able to pitch and not being on a mound for over a year. Honestly didn’t feel real, but it happened”
Though, coming back from the injury only made the moment sweeter for Bressler as his comeback from the injury was completed in his dominant performance.
“It feels amazing, great, awesome, all the words you can think of to throw a no hitter. It truly isn’t easy for people to do regularly and to do it coming off an elbow injury makes me feel so amazing”
Though Bressler’s amazing game and season aren’t the only thing the Boys Varsity Baseball team has going its way. Coming off a 7-15 campaign last season, the win over South River improved Piscataway’s record to 4-3 on the season. Despite the ups and downs the past seasons, Bressler knows being back for his team and playing together will hopefully help Piscataway win some more big games.
“Being on the varsity baseball team now for 4 years I can tell you anything can happen at any given time. Though I know being available and being back on the mound to help my team win some ball games is huge and also adding more people that came from injury is also a big”
Bressler’s impressive season doesn’t stop there: not only is he a star pitcher, he is one of the GMC’s top hitters, and he is one double away from setting the PHS career doubles’ record!
Motivated and driven, Bressler and the rest of the Piscataway team continue their season hoping to reach the postseason. Additionally, Bressler hopes to continue to play his favorite sport after High School and plans to commit to a university in the near future.
