Chappell Roan is a LGBTQ music artist who has recently taken the music industry by storm with popular hits such as “Good Luck Babe!” and “HOT TO GO!”, she has become a role model and figure for many young people. So how exactly did Chappell Roan rise to fame?
Growing Up
Roan’s journey into the music industry began in her Missouri hometown, Willard. Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, as a teenager, she showcased her talent by uploading cover songs on YouTube, and at the young age of 16, she penned her first original song, “Die Young”. At 17, she signed to Atlantic Records and adopted the name Chappell Roan in honor of her late grandfather, who was named Dennis Chappell.
Her early music was dark and introspective, which was showcased in her very first EP, “School Nights” in 2017. However, the trajectory of her career took an unexpected turn when she faced many daunting challenges, including getting dropped from her label, Atlantic Records, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This setback forced her to return to her roots and live with her parents for a while.
Despite all these obstacles, she remained determined. She embarked on a transformative journey, giving herself a year to regroup and improve as an independent artist. During this period, she crafted new songs that she funded herself. These songs celebrated her queer identity and showcased her vibrant, drag-inspired aesthetic.
Her return to the music scene was marked by the release of two tracks; ‘Naked in Manhattan’, and ‘My Kink is Karma’. These two songs were released in mid-2022 and garnered her a significant following. She utilized platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to engage with fans and gain recognition—eventually opening for major artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Fletcher.
In early 2023, Roan launched her “Naked in North America” tour, which became renowned for its unique approach: instead of openers, local drag queens performed instead. Fans were also encouraged to embrace their creativity by dressing up according to nightly themes that were inspired by her songs. The vibrant atmosphere fostered a sense of community and self-expression that resonated deeply with her audience.
To complement her shows, she introduced a TikTok dance for her 2023 single ‘HOT TO GO!’ that amassed over 74,000 posts, reflecting her ability to engage fans through interactive and lively performances. Her rise has been further solidified by her appearances on major late-night TV shows and her captivating and energetic performances at prestigious festivals such as Coachella. She has been nominated for 6 different Grammys, including Best New Artist of the Year and Best Album of the Year. Her journey is a testament to her resilience, creativity, and a profound passion for celebrating her individuality and freedom through her artistry.
