Whether it is turning on the radio, reading through the news, or even just scrolling on social media, she is everywhere. Sabrina Carpenter is the new pop icon along with artists such as Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande.
Or is she?
Pop culture has been around for centuries, dating back to the 1800s. Since it has been such a integral part of our history and day-to-day lives, it is natural for one to feel the need to have a strong opinion about it, and endorse it since it does impact not only us, but also everyone around us.
But do people think that this new “amazing” Pop icon is here for good and should stay? Or does it seem like she is not doing a good job and does not produce quality music?
According to a Student Life article, the author talks about how her lyrics are not worth talking about, stating that she “uses the shock value of sexual lyrics and the admiration of her puns to cover up absolute absurdity.” Because although there have been some concerns about her use of sexual lyrics and messages, whether that is through her infamous “Nonsense outros”, where she changes some lyrics from her hit song “Nonsense” for each city she performs in, or her provocative “Juno” positions that change every show, people seem to really love her no filter approach.
On the other hand, another Student Life article suggests that her lyrics “are not for everyone” and that it is okay “to think these lyrics are somewhat stupid or uninspiring. But the beauty of them lies in their casual and playful manner.” Her unserious and playful tone seems to catch the eye of many, and the main reason for that could be that life is just too serious, and her unseriousness is an escape from reality.
But what about how she rose?
Sabrina Carpenter had been in the public eye for many years, but after she opened for Taylor Swift during her Eras Tour, she really took off. Now, many people credit Taylor Swift for giving her and her music life, while others say that most of it is due to hard work, dedication, and perseverance because she had been creating music for the past 10 years but did not get the publicity she deserved during that time…or does she deserve it?
“I think she really deserves the fame because her songs are so good.” says Asmaa Muhammadu Jalees, a freshman at PHS.
But, along the lines of publicity, there also seems to be a concern about whether she is delivering fruitful and worthwhile content for her audience.
Jalees says that she feels that she is “using her fame to deliver worthwhile content for her audience” and that she deserves everything she is getting and more.
But the author of the Student Life article disagrees, saying that her music is “average” and “sticks to the same production style in a typical vocal range.”
Whether you like it or not, you can’t avoid her. Songs like “Taste”, “Espresso”, “Please Please Please”, and “Bad Chem” are the new rage.
Furthermore, looking at the way she is rising, in addition to how successful her tour is going, I think she is here to stay.
Good thing or not is something that you can decide, but one thing is for sure: she has so much patience and dedication, because, come on, making music for 10 years and getting recognition AFTER all those years? That takes a really cool head.
