Girl Up, a global youth-leadership organization has chapters dedicated to empowering young women in underrepresented communities in order to build equity and project their voices.
At the high school, the club focuses on building a community within the school for not only woman-identifying students, but anyone passionate about pioneering for women empowerment all over the world.
“We’re a safe space for people to come and be comfortable” said PHS junior Niti Dhabalia, Board Event Planner.
Even more so however, the club cynosures around philanthropic work dedicated to improving the security and confidence of women globally, with programs such as their annual Health Sanitary Drive– focused on the collection of women’s sanitary products donated to local women shelters– meant to give back to their community.
Most recently, they hosted the first “Girl’s Night” in the Anthony commons after school Friday, February 8th, to raise money for Girls in Tech. Tickets were sold during lunch that week and students were incentivized to attend with a deal of two tickets for $5, encouraging others to bring a friend.
The hot pink ticket included access to all the activities of the evening, set-up like in a rotation manner. Additionally, light refreshments of adorable heart-shaped desserts were sold, with all proceeds again going to Girls in Tech.
With 30 minutes at each station, Taylor Swift serenaded attendees as they shifted between making friendship bracelets, slime, and decorating their own tote-bags.
Guests definitely seemed to enjoy themselves: “I haven’t made slime in years; it was fun” affirmed junior Jazmine Alvarado Ortiz.
A great opportunity to have a fun time and meet new friends whilst raising money for a great cause, “Girl’s Night” was a girl’s girl.
