Though winter can be tough, our Boys and Girls basketball teams give us something to look forward to (once you can muster the strength to get out of your car and dash inside the gym).
This year, we’re especially excited to highlight our Boys’ Basketball Team, as they have made incredible strides, essentially doubling their win total from last season.

With their playoff season ending on Monday in a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful (71-53) showdown against Westfield, Piscataway made it as far as the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA Tournament in one of the highest brackets, a true testament to their hard work and natural talent.
Of course, a successful season like this was not unexpected, especially with new head coach Robert Turco at the helm. His leadership has been key to the team’s growth, and the players are quick to give him credit for their success.
Senior and Captain Vaughn Turner (Power Forward) attributes much of the teams success to his coach, who “finds a way to light a fire beneath us,” and that with his guidance “[he’s] led to us being one of the most successful teams in Piscataway that we’ve seen in a long time.”
The stats speak for themselves: an impressive 10-game winning streak against schools like Monroe and Lincoln boosted our Chiefs to the final championship round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament (GMC), where they faced off against their rivals from Colonia. Though they lost, they scored an impressive 63 points, with #11 Donald Nwaigwe contributing 16 points on his own.
At the beginning of the season, the team set three main goals, and all were met or exceeded!
- Winning 20 games (finished season 24-6 record)
- Making it to the GMC “Super Saturday” (Quarterfinals) (Played final championship round)
- Tie/break the single season win total record of 24 set by the 2007-08 team (Matched record with 24-win season)
The team’s chemistry, both on and off the court, is one of the factors that stands out the most.
Coach Turco, with over 30 years of experience, emphasizes two of the team’s biggest strengths: “how athletic the players [are] as well as their team chemistry.”
He credits both of these qualities to why they can “full court press” an entire game and have such high ranking starters.
Coach Turco also knows that developing young players requires hours of off-season training. As he puts it, “Developing young players is something that has to be done in the offseason.”
In closing, this season has been one for the books for Piscataway Boys’ Basketball, and the future looks even brighter. With an incredible record, outstanding teamwork, and a coach who knows how to bring out the best in his players, we can’t wait to see what they achieve next year.
