It was the deadly plus-four card that finally did it. The seniors, who are usually quiet and keep to themselves, find themselves chattering and laughing loudly at the lunch table. Their yells and dramatic slamming of the cards onto the prior cards, the silly glances at each other’s eyes, and happy facial expressions are all thanks to the card game UNO, a game that is not usually played at lunch during school. “Uno”, is named after the Spanish word for “one”. Ironically, this game meaning “one” brought these many friends closer together throughout the year.
“Before I’d go on my phone like everyone else,” said Kayla Nguyen, the photographer on this story. People, especially the youth, would go on their phones with any chance they got and therefore be isolated from others. “True friendships don’t come in screens, but in real life interactions. We play to enjoy ourselves and our time with one another.”
