Aah yes, Halloween. A day full of scares, candy, costumes, and all around fun. Yet, the one thing that has been a staple of Halloween tradition….Is horror movies! This genre has evolved from classics like Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Scream, to fresh, new movies like Him, Weapons, and Keeper. Today this article will discuss and share which famous horror movies we students love to watch.
This has been a pondering question for the past week after the night of Halloween. The 3 root reasons of this article is mainly for the spirit of Halloween, sharing people’s opinions, and showing favorite picks of these franchises and films. This article is also here for the most important reason of all, spreading the love of any horror film that is big or small.
After gathering people’s opinions and data. We’ve compared and measured the top 10 horror films people love to get spooky from!
After gathering the opinions of our fellow students, the original Scream (1996) won in a landslide, receiving twice as many votes as any other film! The 3 reasons why students preferred this is because of a good storyline, great franchise, and the overall classic horror atmosphere. Coming up second were the 2017 version of Stephen King’s It and James Wan’s The Conjuring.

The top 3 films have their own amount of popularity and their profit in the Box Office, but It (2017) won by a landslide, by making 704 million dollars worldwide against a 35 million dollar budget. Meanwhile The Conjuring (2013) made 319 million dollars worldwide and Scream (1996) in last place with a worldwide Box Office profit of 173 million dollars.
Although these films were highly praised by students, each of them had flaws. Starting with It (2017), it received praise for its intense horrific atmosphere, strong child acting, and its great emotional moments. But its cons say otherwise because the film had inconsistencies with emotional and horror moments, slow pacing, and underdeveloped characters. Scream (1996), was praised for strong performances, its effect on the horror pop culture, and its innovative humor, its cons say the film has excessive violence, lack of suspense, and focusing on humor instead of the suspenseful moments. Finally with The Conjuring (2013), it was loved for its strong atmosphere, effective use of dread performances, and skilled acting coordination from the filmmaker, James Wan. Its cons however was the film’s over reliance on jump scares, predictable scary moments, and writing inconsistencies.
Every year, new horror movies terrify and entertain PHS students – what any movies next year be able to beat Scream? We’ll have to wait until then to find out!
